We already know that Firefox is the fastest and the most secure internet browser offered in the web. But did you know that you can still make your FIREFOX even faster? Consider this trick and enjoy a very fast internet browsing.

Don't have Mozilla Firefox? Download it using the FIREFOX banner found in my SIDEBAR.

Here's the trick:

1) Open FIREFOX then type "about:config" into the address bar and hit enter. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2) Alter the entries as follows: (by double clicking them)

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once. (I changed mine to 100, works great.)

3) Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

Have a laptop and want to get more battery life out of it? Windows 7 includes a hidden built-in tool that will examine your laptop's energy use and make recommendations on how to improve it. To use it:

1. Run a command prompt as an administrator. To do this, type cmd in the search box, and when the cmd icon appears, right-click it and choose "Run as administrator."

2. At the command line, type in the following:

powercfg -energy -output C:\MyFolder\Energy_Report.html

where C:\MyFolder represents the folder where you want the report to be placed.
(Note: You can change the directory as long as it is existing.)

3. For about a minute, Windows 7 will examine the behavior of your laptop. It will then analyze it and create a report in HTML format in the folder you specified. Double-click the file, and you'll get a report -- follow its recommendations for ways to improve power performance.

Here's a sample of the test:

Windows Aero is the graphical user interface and the default theme in most editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 , operating systems released by Microsoft. It is also available in Windows Server 2008. Its name is a backronym for Authentic, Energetic, Reflective and Open. Intended to be a cleaner, more powerful, more efficient and more aesthetically pleasing user interface than the previously used theme (Luna), it includes new translucency, live thumbnails, live icons, animations and eye candy. Aero also encompasses a set of user interface design guidelines for Microsoft Windows.

Steps:

1. Before considering turning Aero on, make sure you're computer has the following requirements:

An OS (operating system) of Windows Vista Premium/Windows 7 or better (Starter and Basic editions will not support Aero)
1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 GB of system memory
a DirectX 9 compatible graphics processor with a Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) driver and a minimum of 128 MB of Video RAM
40 GB hard drive with 15 GB free space

2. Now, on the desktop, right-click and select "Personalize".

3. (For Vista users): Click on "Theme".

4. (For Vista users) A window will appear, with a list of available themes in a drop-down menu, with corresponding illustrations below. The setting should be on "Vista Basic" as default.

(For Win7 users) A window will appear, showing you all the currently installed themes on your computer. In the window, there is a category called Aero Themes. Just scroll down the window if you can't see it.

5. (For Vista users) In the drop-down menu there is an option for "Windows Aero"

6. (for vista users) Click it, then select Apply then OK and you're computer will be configured to Windows Vista Aero.

(for Win7 users) Click your desired aero theme and it will automatically be applied on your desktop.

7. An important note. If you have already done all of this and aero still isn't working. Make sure your video card setting is at 32 bit. If not you will not be able to use the aero features. You can change this under display settings in the personalization menu.

Windows DreamScene, a feature which allows a video clip, movie show, slideshow or animated image and picture to be set as the desktop background in Windows Vista has been removed in Windows 7, in favor of Desktop Slideshow wallpaper auto rotator. Although Windows 7 no longer supports DreamScane, the DreamScene function can still be manually added and installed into Windows 7 with a little hack in order to turn on and enable the DreamScene support in Windows7.

In order to enable DreamScene in Windows 7, the similar hack which allows DreamScene to be installed on non-Ultimate edition of Windows Vista such as Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Enterprise edition is used. The DreamScene installation hack has been compiled into an executable, which automatically copy the necessary DreamScene files and merge require registry keys and entries.

Note: To run DreamScene in Windows 7, Windows Aero has to be turned on.

How to Install DreamScene in Windows 7

1) Run the Windows7-DreamScene.exe as Administrator.
That's it.

All the installer does is, it will copy DreamScene.dll to %WinDir%\System32 folder, DreamScene.dll.mui to %WinDir%\System32\en-US folder and add the required registry keys and values.
Then it will automatically restart the Explorer to make the installation of DreamScene works immediately.

A Windows DreamScene folder has also been created in %WinDir%\Web\ folder. You can place any video file that you want to set as DreamScene background wallpaper here as in Windows Vista, or anywhere you like. However, the folder is less useful as Windows 7 does not support direct viewing of video or animated media in Personalization Control Panel.

When I read this first in PCWorld.com, my initial reaction was "WHAAAT??". It really made me shocked. But anyway, I don't if this is a good news or sad news but it's official already. In 2008, Bill Gates will retire from his day job as chief software architect of Microsoft, the company he founded more than three decades ago.

Gates said he is leaving gradually in order to smooth the transition of his duties to the two men who will assume them--chief technical officers Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie, who have been named chief software architect and chief research and strategy officer, respectively, effective immediately.

"Except for a little vacation this summer that's longer than normal, I'll be working as hard as I ever have over the next two years," Gates told a news conference at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

However Gates will likely be spending less time at the company, especially after Ozzie and Mundie begin reporting to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer next year.

Gates emphasized that he has no plans to ever give up his position as chairman of Microsoft's board of directors. "I don't see a time in the future when I won't be chairman of this company," he said. "I see myself as always being the largest shareholder in Microsoft. Steve is the second largest, and I think we both take a lot of pride in that."

Gates said he plans to devote more and more time to his role as chairman of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which he says "will have grown" significantly. The foundation is devoted to promoting innovation in global health and education.

Gates admitted he has no real sense of what it will be like to leave Microsoft after so many years. "I don't know what it will feel like not to come in here every day and work for 10 hours," he said. "It's a little bit of an unknown there." But he has two years to prepare, he added, so "I'll see what that's like when I get there."

Even as he announced his retirement plans, Gates sounded as enthusiastic about Microsoft's future as he has since he became an international icon for the age of personal computing. "The shape of computing and how software will change entertainment and business--we really are just at the beginning of that," he said.

Microsoft will ship Windows 7 sometime in or near Jan. 2010, according to a letter company senior vice president Bill Veghte sent to Microsoft customers Tuesday.

The letter, sent to enterprise and business customers, will eventually be publicly posted on Microsoft's Web site. In the letter sent to "Windows Customers" and titled "An Update on the Windows Roadmap," Veghte said "our plan is to deliver Windows 7 approximately three years after the January 2007 general availability launch date of Windows Vista."

Veghte wrote, "You have told us you want a more regular, predictable Windows release schedule" and he said that was the impetus for setting the 2010 the ship date.

Vista has been slowly gaining steam, but is still drawing fire from critics who say it has not lived up to promises.

Veghte went further in addressing customer concerns over application compatibility, which had been a problem shortly after Vista's release.

"You've also let us know you don't want to face the kinds of incompatibility challenges with the next version of Windows you might have experienced early with Windows Vista. As a result, our appro ach with Windows 7 is to build off the same core architecture as Windows Vista so the investments you and our partners have made in Windows Vista will continue to pay off with Windows 7. Our goal is to ensure the migration process from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is straightforward."

Veghte's discussion of Windows 7 was part of an effort to clarify the June 30 XP deadline that will see the operati ng system removed from retail shelves and OEM hardware, and to tout the virtues of Windows Vista. Veghte also thanked customers for their loyalty and support.

Microsoft Corp. is thinking outside the box when it comes to futuristic computer designs - literally. A new system is designed to offer users a 360-degree view and touch-screen access

The company today is showing off a prototype of its Sphere computer at Microsoft's Research Faculty Summit in Redmond, Wash. The Sphere, which is a research prototype and not a finished product, is a multi-user, touch-sensitive display. An orb replaces a traditional flat-screen monitor.

Hrvoje Benko, a human-computer interaction researcher with Microsoft Research, wrote in his blog that the system combines touch capabilities with a projector and an infrared camera. The projector sends images to the inside of the sphere, and can also sense when something touches the outside of the sphere. It's designed to offer a 360-degree view and touch access.

Applications that have been built for the Sphere include a picture and video browser, along with interactive globe visualization, finger painting, and omni-directional video-conferencing applications, according to Benko.

Microsoft would not comment on the project today.

"It's important in that someone is spending time and money to look at different ways to design and use computers," said Dan Olds, principal analyst with the Gabriel Consulting Group. "While some of the form factors, like a sphere, seem to only lend themselves to very simple uses, like an interactive globe, you never know where this type of exploration might lead."

Olds, however, also noted that he can't picture a non-rectangular computer display sitting on his desk - not now anyway. But he likes the idea.

"This type of experimentation and exploration is important because it advances the industry mindset past the static idea that computers are boxy things, monitors are rectangles, and you always use a keyboard and mouse to work it," he added. "The innovation that Microsoft is fueling might result in new Microsoft products, but, more likely, it will fire up someone else's imagination and they'll come up with something that is a radical departure from the status quo, highly useful, and, probably, very cool."

This prototype comes more than a year after the unveiling of Microsoft's touch-enabled, tabletop Surface computers. The company introduced that project in the spring of 2007. It's a computer the size and shape of a coffee table with a flat, touch-screen display. This spring, AT&T disclosed that it has signed up to be the first company to use Surface computers as customer-service kiosks in stores.

A second iPhone exploit has been identified by security vendor F-Secure, which claims the new worm has botnet capability and is more threatening than its predecessor.

Mikko Hyponen, chief research officer at F-Secure, said in a blog post that the new worm, like the first, affects jailbroken iPhones with SSH (secure shell) protocol enabled and unchanged default passwords. The Finnish security company has yet to give a name to the new threat.

Ikee, another threat that was discovered earlier this month, is said to infect vulnerable phones in Australia. When Ikee strikes, it alters the iPhone's wallpaper to an image of Rick Astley with the message "ikee is never going to give you up".

"The worm is not widespread, but it is much more serious than the first iPhone worm as it seems to try to steal information from the devices," Hyponen said about the new worm in the blog post.

Altered password recovered

Paul Ducklin, Sophos' head of technology for the Asia-Pacific region, in a blog post Monday that the new worm he dubbed "Duh" changes the root password which is hidden from users.

Using a password cracker, Ducklin identified the new password as "ohshit". Using this password, users of infected phones can log back into their iPhones and remove the virus, he said.

In a follow-up e-mail to ZDNet Asia, Ducklin said users should upon login check for a directory named "/private/var/mobile/home", which hosts the viral files. Files named "inst", "cydia.tgz", "duh", "sshd" and "syslog" ought be be removed to deactivate the malware, he said.

"Don't have an 'ohshit' moment. Don't give jailbreaking a bad reputation. Change those passwords now," he urged. "Duh changes any password which is currently 'alpine', not just the root password. So fix any user accounts as well."

The latest worm, Ducklin pointed out, was "not unexpected" given the chain of events leading up to it. "A Dutch guy hacks into iPhones--using 'alpine' [as password]--to ask for 5 euros to explain how to secure your phone. There's a reaction.

"Two weeks later an Aussie builds on this idea by writing Ikee, a self-replicating attack, in what he blithely claims to have been an experiment gone wrong," he noted. "And two weeks after that, someone else builds on Ikee with the 'Duh' virus--using Ikee's idea for copying itself to other devices combined with a botnet-based command channel."

In preparation for the beginning of 2010, the Intel Core i9 should embody the new high-end depth and become caliph instead of the caliph. The chip Gulftown on which it rests provides for this to make two significant improvements. On the one hand, it has six hearts and the other belongs to the Westmere architecture inherited from the Nehalem architecture, but using the new method of burning house in 32 nm.

The Polish website PC Lab has released an early test. Using a pre-series Xeon, based on the same chip Gulftown under-clocked to 2.8 GHz, they could get an idea of the benefits of a Core i9 compared to a Core i7 same frequency. The Bloomfield chip on which it relies for recall involves 4-core 45nm.

If performance is no surprise proportional to the number of cores, with a gain of 50% predicted, provided that the applications take advantage of multi-heart, the issue of consumption and heat dissipation, which derives its overclocking potential was less obvious. Thus, not content to consume as much energy at rest in spite of 50% of additional transistors, the Gulftown has the luxury of reducing its consumption of over 9% (24 W) compared to the Core i7. He also less heat.

It is expected that Intel architecture formalizes Westmere at CES to be held in Las Vegas from January 7 to 10, 2010. The founder of Santa Clara should be launching this brand new Core i9 based on the chip Gulftown, but also Core i3, i5 Core and Core i7-based chips and Clarkdale Arrandale for laptops and desktops.

Microsoft is ready to start expanding its AdCenter engine to allow at least some publishers to include contextual advertising from Microsoft on their site.

According to a letter detailing the program and published on TechCrunch, Microsoft is doing a pilot program that allows smaller publishers to use contextual advertising from Microsoft, putting it potentially in competition with Google's AdSense and Yahoo's publisher network.

In a statement provided to CNET News on Thursday, Microsoft confirmed the trial.

"Microsoft's self-serve advertising offering for publishers is still under development and is currently in a private pilot phase, being tested by select publishers who met the participation requirements," Microsoft said. "The private pilot phase began earlier this year."

Microsoft pointed publishers interested in the pilot to sign up for the trial.

"It's our intention to continue to expand our high quality network and relevant audience gradually and intelligently over time for our advertisers," Microsoft said. "We will evaluate customer interest and product performance as we move through the private pilot, but we have no specific launch plans to announce at this time."

Microsoft has already struck deals with larger publishers to use its contextual advertising, most recently with Rodale.

Amusingly, the letter posted to TechCrunch talks about participants in the program needing to sign a confidentiality agreement and not blog about the program. However the letter itself provided some details ahead of any such agreement, a decision I'm sure Microsoft now regrets.

As I was browsing a technology forum just this morning, a bold red title post caught my attention saying "*TESTED AND 100% WORKING BY ME! MY INTERNET SPEED IS MUCH FASTER NOW!". As I install the product and tried it myself, I was really amazed about noticeable effects it brought to my PC. The software is called Full Speed 3.3! Though the product is not that famous, it's performance is really superb. This is not a joke and I mean it! Ultra60small

As an IT student and a future IT professional, the presence of the web or the internet is pretty much important in my field. Part of my IT life is always surfing the web for researches, gathering of technology-related news & updates, telecommuting, social networking, video-streaming, and application downloading. Much of these tasks really require fast and powerful internet connection speed for me to be able to carry out them all. But with an internet speed of up to 60Mbps (the first of its kind), I can do them all simultaneously and even perform additional tasks without experiencing any slow down at all.

A 60Mbps internet connection speed might at first seem to be unfeasible for ordinary home users but because of the new phatband technology, this seemingly impossible speed can now be achieved. People can avail of such amazing service by subscribing to charter ultra fast 60 service. It’s an ultra powerful and ultra fast internet connection currently available in St. Louis and South Carolina and still expanding northeast. Unlike the common connection type which is DSL, it uses the cable internet technology to deliver faster speed.

Just imagining myself having a 60Mbps internet connection speed indeed makes me feel limitless. I can basically do everything I want in the internet such as browsing, video-audio streaming, online-gaming, downloading and many more. Downloading a 700 MB movie file might only take 12-15 minutes against the almost 2 hours downloading from a 1Mbps connection speed. With such high speed, internet will definitely become a completely different experience where one can multitask in ways no one has ever been able to do previously.

Today marks the end of an era, as The Pirate Bay team announces that the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker is shutting down for good. Although the site will remain operational for now, millions of BitTorrent users will lose the use of its tracker and will instead have to rely on DHT and alternative trackers to continue downloading.

In the fall of 2003, a group of friends from Sweden decided to launch a BitTorrent tracker named ‘The Pirate Bay’. It soon became one of the largest BitTorrent trackers on the Internet, coordinating the downloads of more than 25 million peers at its height.

Despite this success, The Pirate Bay operators today decided to pull the plug and close down the tracker permanently. The evolution of the BitTorrent protocol has made trackers redundant they say, as BitTorrent downloads work well with trackerless solutions such as DHT and PEX.

“Now that the decentralized system for finding peers is so well developed, TPB has decided that there is no need to run a tracker anymore, so it will remain down! It’s the end of an era, but the era is no longer up2date. We have put a server in a museum already, and now the tracking can be put there as well,” the Pirate Bay crew write on their blog.

Aside from this shutdown, there is also another major development quietly under discussion.

TorrentFreak has learned that behind the scenes the Pirate Bay operators are talking to other BitTorrent site owners to encourage them to follow suit and completely ditch torrents in the future. BitTorrent has reached a point where trackers and torrents are no longer needed to download files successfully. Supported by all of the major BitTorrent clients, DHT and PEX can handle the transfers and Magnet links can largely replace traditional torrent files.

“We’re talking to the other torrent admins on doing magnet links and DHT+PEX for all sites. Moving away from torrents and trackers totally – like pick a date and all agree ‘from this date, we’ll not support torrents anymore’,” a Pirate Bay insider told TorrentFreak.

Switching to trackerless and torrentless downloading on public BitTorrent sites does indeed seem to be an option. Previously, many people thought that BitTorrent would collapse if a dominant tracker like the Pirate Bay went down, but this doomsday scenario never unfolded. In fact, the recent downtime of the tracker did not slow down or stop many transfers, as DHT and PEX seamlessly took over.

Those BitTorrent users who don’t want to go trackerless just yet can of course still use OpenBitTorrent and PublicBitTorrent, or indeed one of the many other alternative trackers currently available.

Whether or not The Pirate Bay and others will move away from torrent files in the future, the closure of the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker is nevertheless a milestone in the history of the Internet. Starting today, the Pirate Bay has changed its tagline from “The world’s largest BitTorrent tracker” to “The world’s most resilient (magnetic) BitTorrent site.”

Intel and others are planning to release a new version of the ubiquitous Universal Serial Bus technology for quite sometime now. A revamp the chipmaker said will make data transfer rates more than 10 times as fast by adding fiber-optic links alongside the traditional copper wires.

Intel is working fellow USB 3.0 Promoters Group members Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments, NEC and NXP Semiconductors to release the USB 3.0 specification.

In an interview, Gelsinger said there's typically a one- to two-year lag between the release of the specification and the availability of the technology, so USB 3.0 products should likely arrive in 2009 or 2010. A prototype shown is working now, and USB 3.0 will have optical and copper connections "from day one," he added.

The current USB 2.0 version has a top data-transfer rate of 480 megabits per second, so a tenfold increase would be 4.8 gigabits per second. Many devices don't need that much capacity, but some can use more, including hard drives, flash card readers and optical drives such as DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD. The fastest flash card readers today use IEEE 1394 "FireWire" connections that top out at 800 megabits per second.

In addition, USB 3.0 will offer greater energy efficiency, Gelsinger said. It will be backward compatible, so current USB 2.0 devices will be able to plug into USB 3.0 ports.

Toshiba on Tuesday launched a new ultraportable laptop that it claims is the world's lightest, putting it in contention with vendors including Apple and Lenovo.

The company said the full-featured Portégé R500-S5007V weighs just 2.4 pounds (1.08 kilograms), compared to Apple's MacBook Air, which weighs 3 pounds, and Lenovo's Thinkpad X300, which weighs around 2.93 pounds. The laptop measures 0.77 inches at its thinnest point, according to Toshiba.

The company also claimed that the new laptop was the first to include a 128G-byte solid-state drive (SSD) to replace the hard drive. Laptops to date have had 64G bytes of storage, though both Lenovo and Apple provide 128G bytes of storage through two 64G-byte modules.

SSD has no moving parts like a hard drive, so it consumes less power that can give the battery more runtime. The laptop can run for an eight-hour runtime on a single battery charge, according to Toshiba. The company did not respond immediately to questions about the type of battery in the laptop.

Battery life is also preserved by the laptop's transreflective 12.1-inch screen, which can shut down the LED (light-emitting diode) backlighting by reflecting the sun's rays to illuminate the screen, according to Toshiba.

For US$2,999, users can get a laptop powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo U7700 processor at 1.33GHz, with 2M bytes of cache and 2G bytes of RAM. It will come with Windows Vista Business OS, which is also downgradable to Windows XP Professional. The laptop includes a SuperMulti optical drive that can read and rewrite DVD and CD media, wired and wireless 802.11 a/g/n networking, Bluetooth 2.0 support and built-in safety features to protect laptop data during falls.

Toshiba said the laptop includes a specially built motherboard that can provide the same functionality of boards found in 15.4-inch laptops, but is one-third the size.

The laptop will start shipping in the third quarter this year, according to the company. The company wasn't available to comment on worldwide availability.
